On babymoon with Costa Cruises

Mediterranean Sea
When you’re pregnant you have to take a considerable number of practicalities into account, and not every travel destination is suitable. Naturally, you don’t want to endanger yourself or your baby and must therefore consider aspects such as the length of the journey, climate, mandatory vaccinations etc...
With this in mind, we struck upon the idea of booking a Mediterranean cruise.

The perfect solution for our babymoon.

We quickly stumbled across the Costa Cruises website where an 8-day cruise from Venice to Croatia aboard the Costa Luminosa caught our eye.

This was a truly special occasion, so we decided to ‘splash out’ more than usual, and booked a luxury suite with large balcony, an ideal sanctuary in which to relax and unwind after our fun-packed excursions on dry land, which I’ll reveal more of in my following post. And, I’m happy to report that it was more than worth the extra expense! We visited so many beautiful places in such a relatively short time.

That’s mainly reason I love cruise holidays so much. That and the spectacular sunsets... in my opinion, sunsets on the high seas simply cannot be beaten!

As well as enjoying the comfort of our sumptuous suite, we could also make use of all sorts of luxurious facilities, including a personal butler (who remained at our disposal throughout the entire cruise), a daily basket of fresh fruit and bottle of bubbly, a well-stocked mini bar, pillow menu, room service, access to an exclusive restaurant and use of the spa... in other words “luxury cruising” at its finest.

We also had the option of enjoying breakfast “à la carte” in the privacy of our own room, which was pure heaven!

But that wasn’t all. The generous “Intenditore” drinks package was also included in our added extras. This entitled us to unlimited consumption of beverages priced up to 9 Euros and allowed us to indulge in a glass of Jacquart champagne or a freshly prepared cocktail. My husband, Sebastien’s, preferred tipple was a Whiskey sour, mine a Virgin bloody Mary, well spiced :-)

Tip: If you want a glass of champagne then you must explicitly ask for the “Jacquart”, otherwise you’ll be served a glass of Prosecco. Not out of any malice, but rather because the many American passengers on board don't always notice the difference.

Sebastien and I stopped by the “Supernova bar” on deck 2 for pre-dinner drinks at 7 pm every evening. A charismatic musician played captivating live music in a convivial setting, in what became an eagerly anticipated moment of our day. We even belted out our own rendition of “O sole mio” on more than one occasion :-)

Another advantage of booking a suite is that you get to dine in an exclusive restaurant, far from the madding crowds. Club Luminosa was open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The restaurant staff treated us like royalty and we got to sample a huge array of mouth-watering dishes. For breakfast and lunch we could order from either the buffet or an à la carte menu, whilst in the evening we had the choice of several carefully composed menus with a vegetarian option. For us, this was a massive plus!

The staff quickly get to know your names and personal preferences, for a truly memorable dining experience. Amiable waiter, Michael, had our two cappuccinos ready and waiting every morning - a lovely touch that we greatly appreciated.
And my darling hubby was invariably served his glass of red wine on cue every night. I know, isn’t he cute? :-)

The hotel manager also popped by our table each evening to ask if we’d enjoyed our day and whether we required anything else. These small gestures made us, as guests, feel truly welcome and contributed to a thoroughly relaxing holiday.

Each night the thoughtful staff surprised us with a range of indulgent treats including creative origami towel arrangements, slippers placed next to our bed and neatly turned-down bed sheets. We almost couldn’t wait to crash out in our luxurious room each evening and fall sound asleep to the gentle lull of the waves.

If you’re anything like me and you need your peace and quiet, then I thoroughly recommend booking a suite. For those on a tighter budget, the other cabins are obviously an excellent alternative. Indeed, all cabins are extremely spacious and equipped with all mod cons. You can also choose from various drink arrangements and have the option of booking an evening in one of the more exclusive restaurants, such as Club Luminosa.
